YEC Spotlight: Afrikan Unity Initiative

I am T. Jamal Lee founder of Afrikan Unity Initiative, Inc. a non-profit organization with the mission of fostering a sense of togetherness across the Afrikan Diaspora through cultural, educational, and economic collaboration. Through our efforts Afrikans at home and abroad will have quality living conditions, access to economic growth, adequate healthcare, and justice. I am personally invested in this work because of my growing passion for fostering unity throughout the Afrikan Diaspora I am well aware that my success thus far is greatly owed to those educators who took the time to nourish their students. I wish to pay my debt forward by providing the same care and quality learning to the next generation. As a product of a low-income community, I grew weary of organizations with their “sympathy campaigns”.

Many have good intentions and truly mean to help; however, sympathy has an inherent connotation of superiority. This then separates those who attempt to assist from the people in need. An attempt to help without an understanding of the issues from the roots and without the input of the people to which the help is intended is in vain. I have dedicated my entire life to the pursuit of educating people and the attainment of social equality. I just hope that I can give to the communities serviced by my work with Afrikan Unity Initiative as much as I receive from them in order to live out true reciprocity in my work. My upbringing in connection with this service has informed how I work with those who are impoverished as I once was. I now know how I can use my life’s obstacles to positively influence others.
