Each year, Juneteenth gives us a moment — to reflect, to honor, and to recommit. It marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas finally learned of their freedom — more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

At the Atlanta Black Chambers, Juneteenth isn’t just a commemoration of freedom — it’s a call to action. It reminds us that freedom is more than a moment in history. It’s the right to own, to build, to thrive, and to lead on our own terms.

Atlanta: A Legacy of Black Enterprise

Atlanta has long been a cradle of Black excellence — not just in civil rights, but in commerce. From the days of Sweet Auburn Avenue, once dubbed “the richest Negro street in the world,” to today’s thriving ecosystem of Black-owned businesses, this city has always been a force in building economic empowerment in the Black community.

Leaders like Alonzo Herndon, born into slavery and later founder of Atlanta Life Insurance Company, laid the groundwork for generations of Black business owners to thrive. Institutions like The Atlanta Daily World, The Butler Street YMCA, and Morris Brown College helped cultivate both civic pride and economic momentum during the 20th century.

This spirit of enterprise didn’t just build wealth — it built community. And today, that same legacy lives on through organizations like the Atlanta Black Chambers, committed to supporting Black entrepreneurs, increasing access to capital, and making sure the next 100 years of Black business in Atlanta are even more impactful than the last.

Why This Celebration Still Matters

Juneteenth calls us back to our roots — but also calls us forward.

We celebrate not just what was taken, but what was reclaimed. We remember not just the pain, but the persistence. And most of all, we recommit to a future where equity, ownership, and generational wealth are non-negotiable.

As Melvin Coleman, CEO of the Atlanta Black Chambers, puts it:

“Juneteenth is not just a reflection of where we’ve been — it’s a challenge to shape where we’re going. Let’s honor this day by building, supporting, and uplifting Black enterprise at every level.”
